The French Defence become a proper band again on Saturday!
Ooh. Oooooooh! Super-excited to say that on Saturday I’ll be taking to the stage with three lovely people to play French Defence songs as a full band, for the first time in 9 years! We’ll be playing at Don’t Falter in Leeds, it’s free entry and it’s going to be a lot of fun.
I imagine the set will be a nice taster of tracks from the album - hopefully they’ll go down well. Come along!
Sketches of the September Leaf - out today!
So it’s finally an actual thing that you can listen to and love and blog about and forget about and then rediscover and love again and everything.
Whew. It’s only taken, what, the best part of 5 years to sort my sorry arse out and get this thing recorded and released - the second album better not take quite so long.
Anyway. The album is available from bandcamp here: http://thefrenchdefence.bandcamp.com/album/sketches-of-the-september-leaf , and you can download it or get a LIMITED EDITION CD with unique leafy print (each cover is a different print) . Which means I pop something in the post for you, and let’s face it, everyone likes getting exciting post, don’t they?
Take a listen, and I hope you like what you hear.
Introducing the new French Defence album!
So, it’s Indietracks this weekend apparently (whaaaaay!) and what better time to announce the release of a new French Defence record? It’s called ‘Sketches of the September Leaf’, and it’s a little bit pop, a little bit country (y’all), a little bit introspective and very slightly sweary. There are tales of cats, coffee, fountains, mountains and booze; unrequited love, dissolving love, heartbreak and jaw ache.
I’ll have copies for sale on the merch stand (definitely on Sunday and hopefully on Saturday too, if I can persuade Finnmark into some sort of cosy sharing arrangement J ), and for those of you who can’t make it, it’ll be up on Bandcamp next week at some point. Hurrah!
So, what’s on this opus, I hear you cry? Behold!
The Tabby Cat
If You Still Want Him
The Chinese Room
At Either End
If you want a bit of a try before you buy, then feast yer ears on the track above…
For those of you coming to Ripley this weekend, I’m on in the Church at 1.20pm on Sunday. Come along, and say hello! I’ll also be hitting bass strings with giddy abandon with Finnmark first thing on Saturday in the Shed. The weather forecast is a little soggy so at least you’ll be dry… I’m also twitchy with anticipation about seeing The Magic Theatre (aka Danny and Sophia from Ooberman), and The Ballet, and Camera Obscura, and Kid Canaveral, and ANOTHER SUNNY DAY! ON THE TRAIN! (very slim chance of getting on board for that though… I can imagine it’ll be rather busy!) Anyway. You get the (wave) picture.
Very excited now. Eeeep.
Indietracks Compilation 2013 - buy it!
47 track album
That’s all I need to say.
Indietracks is 5 WEEKS away. Eep…
I’ve just started a French Defence twitter account. I’ll probably regret this…
There aren’t enough hours in the day for all this.
I’ve been busy. Busy organising a wedding, busy organising moving house, busy trying (and failing) to buy a car, busy at work, busy playing gigs with Finnmark! and the Seven Inches, busy trying to mither Faith and relax when not doing all of the aforementioned. Faith has been even busier, and she doesn’t have the gigs to play. Which makes me feel like I could be getting more done. And I could.
So the next few months are going to be HECTIC. But hey. It’s not as if I was updating this that regularly in the first place.
So, (one of) the other band(s) that I’m in played our first gigs last week - supporting The Birthday Kiss at Wharf Chambers, then at Don’t Falter the following evening. Both were ACES - TBK have such utterly lovely songs, and Don’t Falter is always good fun. Although I did leave the tapes I’d obtained at Baby Jupiter. Oops.
We also found a polystyrene gravestone in a mystic cupboard whilst we were soundchecking at Baby Jupiter. So naturally it found its way onstage.
We have no drummer at the moment so Ed has been carting his CD player around as backup… this has its moments when he accidentally hits eject rather than play…
Will hopefully be taking delivery of some blank cassettes this weekend. Indietracks, you may see some new French Defence articles heading your way… now, what to put on them…?
Indietracks! Bloody Indietracks!
I’m utterly chuffed to announce that The French Defence will be playing this year’s Indietracks festival. It’s been the best weekend of the pop year for the last, ooh, 5 years or so, and it’s a real honour to be sharing a line-up with bands like Camera Obscura, The Pastels, The Magic Theatre and Still Corners. Wow.
You can find all the details here, you can: http://www.indietracks.co.uk/index.html
By the way, the new Camera Obscura songs sound ACE.
